Description:

On their way to start a new life, Tula and her family travel on the Prairie Rose, a colony ship headed to a planet in the outer reaches of the galaxy. All is going well until the ship makes a stop at a remote space station, the Yertina Feray, and the colonist’s leader, Brother Blue, beats Tula within an inch of her life. An alien, Heckleck, saves her and teaches her the ways of life on the space station.

When three humans crash land onto the station, Tula’s desire for escape becomes irresistible, and her desire for companionship becomes unavoidable. But just as Tula begins to concoct a plan to get off the space station and kill Brother Blue, everything goes awry, and suddenly romance is the farthest thing from her mind.
Review: I had the hardest time getting the motivation to pick this book up but after TBF my interest was piqued. I’m so glad it was because once I got into this book I had a difficult time putting it down. One of the things I liked most about this book was that the romance was kept pretty much to the minimum, it wasn’t even really a part of the first half of the book. The author described it as “low romance, it’s not the whole plot of the book because there are more important things going on.
I got very emotional at several parts of the story, something I did not expect going in. Castellucci gets you attached to her characters without you even realizing it is happening until those characters are in danger. She also can make you hate a character so easily. Then she has those characters in between whom you’re not entirely sure whether to love or hate. These are the ones that keep you on your toes and make the story so much more interesting.
There are actually two sort of romances in the story, the first of which I really couldn’t care less about. I really didn’t care about its outcome so that’s that. The second comes so close to the end that I really can’t wait for the sequel because I need to know what happens with them so bad! The reveal was so perfect and I actually said “awwwww” out loud when it happened. No love triangle so far! Plus points to you, Castellucci.
I recommend this book to sci-fi fans everywhere, especially if you like your romance a little less in the foreground.
