10 Halloween Movies For YA and Adult Readers

I made two lists for older fans of Halloween movies. I know that some people don’t like scary movies, or just don’t do horror movies. This list will feature non horror movies that I think make good Halloween watching, later I will make one that is horror movie specific for all of those horror fans out there. So let’s get to the list, 10 Halloween movies for YA and Adult Readers….

1. Ghost- As the name suggests there are ghosts in this movie. For the most part it’s a very romantic movie about a guy protecting his girlfriend and figuring out who killed him. There are some spooky bits at the end, but nothing that will give you nightmares. Also, Whoopi Goldberg OWNS in this movie. This one is a bit more adult because of a certain scene.

2. Practical Magic- Based on the book by Alice Hoffman, it actually is one of the rare cases where the movie is better than the book. No, that’s not a joke. Witches are the topic of this movie and the actors do a wonderful job making the whole world believable.

3. Young Frankenstein- It’s Mel Brooks so there’s going to be a bit of off color humor but this is my favorite “Frankenstein” movie in existence.

4. The Lost Boys- Punk 80’s vampires is what you’ve got going here. If this was a YA book I would devour it in seconds. This is probably one of the “scarier” movies on this this, but only in the way that the makeup for Buffy is “scary”. Which to me is not at all. This is the 80’s at its best.

5. Dark Shadows- Oh look, more horror comedy. Johnny Depp as a vampire? Totally not scary. Funny Halloween movie? You bet.

6. Sleepy Hollow- What do you know, another Johnny Depp film. Another Tim Burton film for that matter. Burton is the king of Halloween and he usually drags Johnny in along with him. A very loose adaptation of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, though only the names and the horseman bear any resemblance to the story. If you want accuracy try Disney’s animated short.

7. The Covenant- Hot YA boys with badass powers. “Witches” as it were, related to many of the families in the Salem Witch Trials That’s pretty much the big premise of this film. Hey, I never said this was a scholarly list!

8. The Crow- This is one of my favorite movies to watch around this time, or really any time of the year. Your classic revenge film but with a bit more sweet romance than expected. Oh, also Brandon Lee died on set during this film due to a prop malfunction. People called it cursed. I believe there’s also a graphic novel of this one.

9. Van Helsing- Maybe not what you would call a good movie, but definitely a fun one. Creatures of all kinds show up in this movie: Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde, Dracula and his brides, Frankenstein and his monster, a werewolf or two. Quite the literary showing.

10. The Sixth Sense- More ghosts. Honestly if you haven’t seen this yet where have you been? This is one of M. Night Shyamalan’s actually good movies and that’s saying something, there are only 3 that meet the qualifications for “good”.
