Review: I really don’t get it, this series is all over the place. The first book was good, the second was awful, the fourth was great, and this one? This one is…well it’s just ok. It’s not awful by any means but it’s also not great. It didn’t really feel like a conclusion, so it’s good that they decided to continue the series.

Not a whole lot has changed here: Aspen still pisses me off and America is still an annoying little tit. Ok, well she’s less annoying that she was in The Elite. I’ll give her that much. Maxon, for the most part, stops acting like the jerk he was in The Elite. Finally these characters became tolerable again. So let’s talk about the tying up of loose ends.

Does anyone else find the rebels a little less than threatening? I’m sorry but to me it just seems like if the characters were more competent they’d swat these losers like flies. The threat doesn’t have the weight that it should and therefore the ending becomes a little bit silly. I just can’t take them seriously.

This series is a strange beast. I’ve never read a book with such obnoxious characters that’s still so addicting. I hate Aspen, America gets on my nerves, even Maxon has moments when he grinds my gears, and yet I was still desperate to find out what would happen next. How does that even happen? I have to give the author credit.

I was happy with the ending. Things mostly went the way I wanted them to (though I still want someone to dump Aspen off a cliff) and the experience was much better than it was with The Elite. I hope these books continue to get better instead of worse.
