The Maze Runner Movie Review

September 23, 2014     erinbook     Page to Screen

Oh. My. God. I read this series two or three years ago and immediately had to own it. This was one of those books that even though I loved the main character, I adored the side characters even more. This is one thing that scares me when I go in to watch a movie adaptation of a book like this, that being that they’re going to screw up my beloved side characters. I can happily say that the opposite happened here: they blew me away.
Going into this movie I already knew that one of my favorite younger actors was going to play Newt. Thomas Brodie-Sangster is one of my favorite British actors; having been in Love Actually,  Game of Thrones, and freaking Doctor Who! What I didn’t know was that the boy who played Eustace in The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader had grown up into kinda of a badass and was playing Gally. Both were absolutely fantastic and can I please keep Newt? Or his actor? That’d be fine to. I also really enjoyed the performances of Aml who plays Alby, and Ki Hong Lee who plays my favorite character Minho.
As for accuracy of the plot, well it’s been 3 or so years since I’ve read the book. Still, I’d say that the movie was a pretty faithful adaptation, especially to the spirit of the story. The Glade and the Maze were mostly how I pictured them, though the Maze was a lot creepier in the film.
Speaking of creepy: Holy Grievers, Batman! They are much creepier than I imagined when I was reading the book! And I love it. They were pretty cool and threatening, exactly as they should be. Can I have one of those things as a guard dog? As long as it doesn’t try to eat me.
4.5 Nuts
I can’t wait to see what they do with The Scorch Trials but if it’s anything like this then I’ll probably love it.

  1. My boyfriend and I just finished reading the series a couple of weeks ago and we are going to see the movie tonight. Two of our other friends saw the movie and enjoyed it but they hadn't yet read the book so I'm glad you thought it had the same feel. I am really looking forward to it, thanks for the review! 🙂
