Description: A collection of the journals, fiction, letters, and sketches of the late Esther Grace Earl, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 16. Photographs and essays by family and friends will help to tell Esther’s story along with an introduction by award-winning author John Green who dedicated his #1 bestselling novel The Fault in Our Stars to her.

Review: This book is an experience. I don’t read a whole lot of diary type books but this was one I knew I would have to pick up. Being a nerdfighter, of course I had heard about Esther. I was a little late to the game so by the time I became a nerdfighter Esther was already almost gone. So when I heard about this book I knew I needed to read her story, from her word and the words of her family and friends.

This book will make you cry. I’m going to say that right now. It’s not very often that I get that emotional over a book (unless it’s by John Green). But the honesty and heart of this book really got me. You read Esther’s own words, knowing what will happen later on, and you can’t help but get choked up.

It’s not just Esther’s words that make up this book, it’s also the words of her friends, her parents, her doctors, and John Green himself. It’s the pieces from her family that really filled in some of the blanks. The story doesn’t end after Esther dies, because there are people she left behind. Every word tugs at your heart and makes a wonderful tribute for Esther.

My favorite part has to be the creative parts of Esther’s life that they added in. There’s an entire section dedicated to Esther’s creative writing, and some of the work is really, really good!

If you like diary type books or are interested in this girl that the nerdfighter community is so in love with then I recommend this book to you. If you don’t like reading sad books, though, it might not be for you.

  1. Sounds like a really touching book. I hadn't heard of Esther before the book was being publicized with the connection to The Fault in Our Stars. I purchased a copy for my library's teen room and it is really popular. I will have to check it out sometime when I'm in the mood for a tearjerker.

    Thanks for your review!
