GATES OF THREAD AND STONE Book summary:

In the Labyrinth, we had a saying: keep silent, keep still, keep safe.

In a city of walls and secrets, where only one man is supposed to possess magic, seventeen-year-old Kai struggles to keep hidden her own secret—she can manipulate the threads of time. When Kai was eight, she was found by Reev on the riverbank, and her “brother” has taken care of her ever since. Kai doesn’t know where her ability comes from—or where she came from. All that matters is that she and Reev stay together, and maybe one day move out of the freight container they call home, away from the metal walls of the Labyrinth. Kai’s only friend is Avan, the shopkeeper’s son with the scandalous reputation that both frightens and intrigues her.

Then Reev disappears. When keeping silent and safe means losing him forever, Kai vows to do whatever it takes to find him. She will leave the only home she’s ever known and risk getting caught up in a revolution centuries in the making. But to save Reev, Kai must unravel the threads of her past and face shocking truths about her brother, her friendship with Avan, and her unique power.

 THE INFINITE Book summary:

The walls of Ninurta keep its citizens safe.

Kai always believed the only danger to the city came from within. Now, with a rebel force threatening the fragile government, the walls have become more of a prison than ever.

To make matters worse, as Avan explores his new identity as an Infinite, Kai struggles to remind him what it means to be human. And she fears her brother, Reev, is involved with the rebels. With the two people she cares about most on opposite sides of a brewing war, Kai will do whatever it takes to bring peace. But she’s lost her power to manipulate the threads of time, and she learns that a civil war might be the beginning of something far worse that will crumble not only Ninurta’s walls but also the entire city.

In this thrilling sequel to Gates of Thread and Stone, Kai must decide how much of her humanity she’s willing to lose to protect the only family she’s ever known.

Lori M Lee talks about her cover….

Breaking Down the Cover

Before Gates of Thread and Stone even had a cover, I thought it’d be super cool to see Kai riding a Gray. I didn’t think it’d be possible, though, so I didn’t even ask for it. So almost a year later, when my editor emailed me the cover comp for The Infinite, I just about died when I saw it. My exact reaction was: “Hoooolyyy shhhhh—”

This cover is perfect in so many ways that it blows my mind. I’ve stuck it on every electronic device I own. I want to wallpaper my house with it. It’s insane. (Or possibly just I am . . .)

Okay, so let’s break it down so you can understand as well just how perfect it is.

~ Kai is riding a metal cat called a scout. It’s a specific type of Gray, faster and more agile than other Grays and typically reserved only for sentinels. Grays (they come in all sizes and forms, a horse being the most common) are the only modes of transportation in Ninurta, and they’re powered by energy stones that cause the eyes to glow red (as well as through the vents on the Gray’s chest). Energy stones are magic stones created from human blood. The Grays literally run on human life.

~ The sword on Kai’s back is a torch blade, the primary weapon of sentinels. They can cut through almost anything. She gets lessons in sword fighting in this book, and she also uses a torch blade a number of times, so its presence is a great addition.

~ The setting is the Outlands, the desert wastes that exist outside of Ninurta. Kai travels through the Outlands on a scout in the book.

~ I love that the model doesn’t look 100% white. Her race is a bit ambiguous, yes, but she looks possibly mixed. I’ve always imagined Kai as biracial, so that’s awesome.

There you have it. I hope you love the cover as much as I do!

  1. The Grays were one of my favorite things in Gates and now I adore the Scouts. The whole mechanical animals thing fascinates me, so I was also over rhe moon when I saw the cover! Kai's features, were pretty much spot on to how I envisioned her. I was so happy her head wasn't half cut off again. 🙂

  2. Oh, wow! I LOVE all this extra info! I mean, I absolutely adored the cover before, but learning some of the background on it makes it twenty times better. Also, I can see why Lori put it on every one of her electronic devices.
