If you’ve been living under a rock for the last couple of weeks/months you may be one of the only people who has not heard that John Green’s book, The Fault in Our Stars, is now a movie. And now, as of this past weekend, that movie is officially released into theaters. For a while, the author of the original source material has been telling the world how faithful he thinks the adaptation is and how much he loves the movie. First let me say that if John Green really hated the movie they made from his book, we would all certainly know. Green is not shy of sharing his opinions on his half of the Vlogbrothers videos.
But what is the opinion from fans? They seem to love it. I have not yet heard a bad word said about the film, and having seen it myself just yesterday, I have to agree. This was an excellent, faithful adaptation of the beloved book.
Having gone into the film after reading the book I knew what to expect, but that didn’t make the ending any less emotional or poignant. It was beautifully done and obviously made with love on the parts of the cast and crew members. It has been a long time since I’ve gone into a movie theater and come out as satisfied as I did yesterday. Shailiene Woodely and Ansel Elgort played the leads well without giving the movie an overly sappy feel, something I was worried might be the case. Nat Wolff made me love Isaac, a character that I often just sort of ignored in the book because he annoyed me from the word go… or “always”.
I was disappointed at one or two of the scenes that were cut, such as the V for Vendetta bit, but I can easily live without it and the movie did not suffer from its loss.
Really, the movie was great, I am a very happy fan.
