New soul
Ana is new. For thousands of years in Range, a million souls have been reincarnated over and over, keeping their memories and experiences from previous lifetimes. When Ana was born, another soul vanished, and no one knows why.
No soul
Even Ana’s own mother thinks she’s a nosoul, an omen of worse things to come, and has kept her away from society. To escape her seclusion and learn whether she’ll be reincarnated, Ana travels to the city of Heart, but its citizens are afraid of what her presence means. When dragons and sylph attack the city, is Ana to blame?
Heart
Sam believes Ana’s new soul is good and worthwhile. When he stands up for her, their relationship blooms. But can he love someone who may live only once, and will Ana’s enemies—human and creature alike—let them be together? Ana needs to uncover the mistake that gave her someone else’s life, but will her quest threaten the peace of Heart and destroy the promise of reincarnation for all?
Jodi Meadows expertly weaves soul-deep romance, fantasy, and danger into an extraordinary tale of new life.

During December I went on a binge. I was determined to add as many unread books as I could to my read pile, and in the process maybe take some of those now read books off my shelves. Needless to say I was successful.

Because of this a lot of books were DNFed in the process, all for various reasons. This was one of them. I had an idea that this might be a bad fit for me, I’ve heard copious amounts of mixed reviews for this series. Unfortunately it seemed to lean a bit heavy of the side of meh from my most trusted sources so I went into this book wary and ready to pull the plug if I felt like I was wasting my time.

So what was the main reason for this DNF? Well there are actually two.

Reason 1:

This book was boring. Like I-literally-might-fall-asleep boring. Like want-throw-this-book-out-a-window boring. Even I-wonder-what-my-fiancee-is-doing-at-work BORING! I didn’t even make it half way. This book got my 100 page try and then I just had to give it up as not for me.

Reason 2:

The MC. Yes, this main character is just blech. She’s so bland, which considering that she’s supposed to be so extraordinary makes n0 sense. She didn’t seem to have very much of a personality, nothing to set her apart from any other female character in existence. She’s a bit of a damsel in distress from the beginning, nothing that never endears me to a book, and she doesn’t do a whole lot. Her goals are unremarkable and I really don’t care what happens to her. So why bother continuing.

There is a bit of a bright spot in this book though, and that is the world. The world building is incredibly good and with a different character and a different plot I think I really could have like it, maybe even loved it. It had a lot of potential there and if Jodi ever wrote a spin off with a different character I would totally read it.

Having such a low opinion of this book made me so sad because I absolutely adore Jodi Meadows. Heck, I had her on the blog just last week to talk about piracy. But not every book is for every person and this one just wasn’t for me. Does that mean all of Jodi’s books aren’t for me? Heck no, I’m loving Orphan Queen to death. I try not to judge an author’s entire body of work based on hating a single book. It happens very often that I’ll like one series but not another (ie loving Lauren Destefano’s Perfect Ruin but having so many problems with the Chemical Garden Trilogy) That’s just how it goes.
