I don’t know about plot twists but I never actually like them. stories can be told directly without any twist and I’m okay with that.

by your review, you seems to say middle books are weak on plot twist and have expected endings but I read a lot of books like these and they’ aren’t bad.

also, I find I don’t always like dark and gritty, sometimes light and sweet can be good. though I do think you’re probably right on the dark and gritty for the second book.
