Post Series Cover Changes

July 15, 2018     erinthebooknut     Cover Talk

All book lovers have this in common: a severe dislike of mid series cover changes. But what about when a publisher changes them after?

Recently a few such changes have caught my eye so I felt the need to show them off.

Let’s discuss.

Kristin Cashore’s GRACELING will be reaching it’s tenth anniversary soon and in honor the publisher will be releasing this new edition of the book, complete with extras.

As far as the “new” cover goes I can’t say very much about it. It’s pretty much the same, only a new background for the blade to sit on. It’s not as detail, though definitely pretty. I’m just not very impressed and I don’t feel the need to purchase it for the new cover.

With the impending release of the next book in the world of Robin LaFevers’ HIS FAIR ASSASSINS we also have the release of new matching covers of the original series. Let’s have a look.

This new GRAVE MERCY cover is more in line with what I wanted for the GRACELING rerelease. While keeping with the central object (the crossbow) and color (red), this cover stands on its own and is starkly beautiful and detailed. I’m definitely feeling the urge to buy this one.

DARK TRIUMPH is unique in that it had a second cover for its paperback release. I’ve said before that I beleive this paperback edition is hideous, lazy, and plain poorly designed and executed. That hair. Yikes.

The original cover grabs you with Sybella’s mystery immediately. While that element is missing in the newest cover, I think it is gorgeous regardless. Simple but detailed, it might not be as descriptive as the original but it is eye-catching anyway.

I have always been a fan of MORTAL HEART’s cover so I’m happy to say that this cover still remains my favorite in this new incarnation. I think it’s probably the most detailed of the 3, the shade of green darkening to black shadows perfectly represent the story within. If I could only get one of the three new covers I would choose this one.

How do you feel about these new covers and post series cover changes in general? Share in the comments.

From my shelf to yours,
