For those who read THE DEMIGOD FILES this book is the next step up. Not only do these stories continue the backstory and inform the reader of what is to come in the HEROES OF OLYMPUS series but it also answers a few questions. How could Luke have gone so bad? Was he really evil? What happened to the demigods who helped him? This book will tell you.
The Diary of Luke Castellan
I’ve always liked Luke as a character. I mean his a dick, but he’s an interesting dick. This story gives him another layer, one that makes you understand the fondness Annabeth has for him. It also makes him that much more sympathetic. All he knows of the gods is simply disappointment and cruelty, something this story only proves to him. You can’t help but feel bad for the guy.
Percy Jackson and The Staff of Hermes
This story is mostly fluff, perfect for Percabeth shippers. I love the snakes on Hermes’ staff, George and Martha, but there are parts of this story that are just supremely eyeroll worthy. The quest itself is kinda cool, and the story is a sort of prequel for all the crap that’s about to go down in HEROES OF OLYMPUS. It even gives a few hints. But the ending is pure shippy mush. Still, it’s solid. Just not great.
Leo Valdez and the Quest for Buford
This is our first story without any of the typical Percy world MC’s. Meet the characters of THE LOST HERO, though it will really not make a single bit of sense without having read that book. The story follows Leo son of Hephestus, Piper daughter of Aphrodite, and Jason son of Zeus as Leo builds the ARGO II (this is the main reason this book is classified as HEROES OF OLYMPUS 2.5). The entire story revolves around the dumbest of dumb mistakes and a couple of party hungry nature spirits. Yeah, I know, weird. It’s not my favorite but it’s a solid story anyway.
Son of Magic
What happened to the other demigods who followed Kronos? How does the Mist work? These questions and more are answered not my Rick, but by his 16 year old son for whom the Percy books were originally written. Haley Riordan writes his own story set in the Percy Jackson world. And he does an incredible job. If I had been able to write like that at 16 I would already be published.
This is an excellent collection and a much better set than the DEMIGOD FILES. More content, less filler, just the way I like it. I highly recommend this one, read between either LOST HERO and SON OF POSEIDON for SON OF POSEIDON and MARK OF ATHENA.
