Charlie Grant’s older sister is getting married this weekend at their family home, and Charlie can’t wait—for the first time in years, all four of her older siblings will be under one roof. Charlie is desperate for one last perfect weekend, before the house is sold and everything changes. The house will be filled with jokes and games and laughs again. Making decisions about things like what college to attend and reuniting with longstanding crush Jesse Foster—all that can wait. She wants to focus on making the weekend perfect.

The only problem? The weekend is shaping up to be an absolute disaster.

There’s the unexpected dog with a penchant for howling, house alarm that won’t stop going off, and a papergirl with a grudge.

There are the relatives who aren’t speaking, the (awful) girl her favorite brother brought home unannounced, and a missing tuxedo.

Not to mention the neighbor who seems to be bent on sabotage and a storm that is bent on drenching everything. The justice of the peace is missing. The band will only play covers. The guests are all crazy. And the wedding planner’s nephew is unexpectedly, distractingly…cute.

Over the course of three ridiculously chaotic days, Charlie will learn more than she ever expected about the family she thought she knew by heart. And she’ll realize that sometimes, trying to keep everything like it was in the past means missing out on the future.

Allison’s Review :

As a long time Morgan Matson fan, I was so excited to read her newest novel SAVE THE DATE (Thank you to Morgan for sending me an early copy). I absolutely love all of Morgan’s books as they are perfect “new beginning” and “summer beach” reads. I was not disappointed with the newest of Morgan’s books.

Charlie is the youngest of five children and has always hated change but has always had her family as her constant support system. She has to deal with so much the summer before she goes away to college and has yet to make her final college decision months before she is set to start college. She was accepted into three schools and wanted to pick the one closest to home despite everyone around her wanting her to choose otherwise. As her siblings are all flying in for her older sister Linnie’s wedding, she is met with so much nostalgia and love for her family, but sadness that in the next couple of months there will be a lot of change going on around her.

Her parents had decided to sell the family home and end the family comic strip, Grant Central Station. This comic strip grew up with the family and each family member encountered similar situations that the characters in the strips did. Charlie’s family has meant the world to her and because of that she has gone through life with not many close friends but instead rely on her family. Throughout the weekend of her family all flying in for the wedding, she realized that her family would not always be there. I really connected with Charlie and her sense of family and dislike of change. She is such a strong and reliable sibling for her older siblings.

I absolutely loved how much Charlie grew in the short period of time that we got to see a glimpse into her life. It was like we were there to attend the wedding and were part of the whole experience. I grew to really love the family dynamic and jokes that they all had with each other. Each sibling had a different type of bond with another sibling. At first it was a little difficult to remember the individual siblings and their personality, but as the story went on it was easy to remember and felt like you were part of the family.

This book had major My Big Fat Greek Wedding feels that I absolutely fell in love with. It had me laughing out loud at different parts (also those Target exclusive short stories!). I loved how Andie, Clark, and Governor Walker all made cameos in the book too! Amy Curry also made a picture cameo!

Save the Date didn’t focus on the contemporary aspect that many of Morgan’s other books do, but instead focused mostly on family and change. Overall, I really recommend this book for a summer read. Also, Siobhan (Vivian) and Morgan (Matson) are friendship goals!
