Thumbing Through Throwbacks: Artemis Fowl

Ok, raise your hand if you haven’ heard of this series. If your hand is raised where have you been? Seriously? Other than Harry Potter, Artemis Fowl was the one series I followed religiously as a kid. We went and got the later books on release day, I had ships that I supported with all my heart, and followed the series even into my late teens. Because of this series I went and bought all of Eoin Colfer’s other books, and still have them. So what was it about Artemis Fowl? Well, it was…Artemis.
I adored Artemis. Snarky boy genius, a bit of a bad boy, had his own kick ass bodyguard. You know, he was just cool. He had gadgets and a brain. He had a vulnerability too that I really enjoyed. How can you not love him? Then there was Holly Short. Also snarky, also bad ass, also a FAIRY! Dude, fairies. I loved the mix of science and tech with magic and fairy tale. Actually, I still do. And yes, Holly/Artemis was totally my ship. Sorry, not sorry.
And then this happened….

Ugh, why! So not only did the last two books come out with covers that didn’t match the originals but those two books didn’t even match EACH OTHER! Someone. Please. Kill. Me. I loved the original covers, they were kind of mysterious and cool. The new ones make it look like some kind of kids’ James Bond rip off.
But the insides are still beautiful. Ok, admission time. I haven’t finished the last book in this series. Why? Because I don’t want it to end. I’m scare that I won’t like the ending or that it wasn’t wrapped up well. So the book sits on my shelf while I’m torn between devouring it and letting it stay unfinished.
I really want to do an Artemis reread one of these days when my TBR is a bit smaller. I really want to join Artemis’ world again and especially reread my favorite book in the series: Eternity Code. Will I replace my old covers with new? God no. I have first editions of the whole series! You’d have to pry them from my cold, dead fingers.
Did you read Artemis Fowl? What do you remember? Share in the comments.

  1. Someone had given my son a few of these books but he hasn't read them. In fact I never even thought about reading them myself, so perhaps I'll have to check them out!!! Yes it's always annoying when covers change a lot.

  2. I loved Artemis Fowl growing up! I remember spending an entire plane ride decoding the runes in the first book with a friend. I actually did a complete audiobook re-read of the series last year. I only read the first five as a middle/highschooler, so the last three were new to me. Aside from books 6 & 7, which got way too cheesy, I still really enjoyed the series. 🙂
